ONYX
- BLACK BEAN - Advanced Genetics
Performance
and Adaptability - Onyx is a new mid-season, black bean
variety that has exhibited wide adaptability throughout
northern and Great Lakes growing regions. Although this
variety’s medium-sized vine may close production
rows most pods are held off the ground. This has allowed
Onyx to deliver high quality pods despite wet harvest
conditions. A quick dry-down further enhances Onyx’s
yield potential.
Growth Habit and Maturity - Onyx has an upright, arched
structure, short runner, wide branching profile, and
high pod set. It matures approximately 95 days from
planting, about one or two days earlier that T-39.
Seed Quality - Onyx typically yields approximately 2,300
plump, dull black seeds per pound. Onyx seed has shown
a tendency to germinate well in cool soils.
Disease Resistance - Onyx has exhibited resistance to
the prevalent strains of Bean Common Mosaic virus, and
anthracnose race 7 making it an ideal choice for Great
Lakes production areas. It has also shown tolerance
to bean rust, and moderate tolerance to Fusarium root
rot.
