Merlot
Merlot small red is a high yielding variety with an upright, shortvine growth habit and mid-to-full season
maturity. Merlot is resistant to strains of bean rust and bean common mosaic virus in Michigan. The average seed size is 36 g
per 100 seed but seed size can range from
30-45 g per 100 seed. Merlot was rated by a team of panelists as above average for canning quality, scoring
a 5.6 on a scale of 1 to 7 where 1 is the
worst, 7 is the best, and 4 is considered
average.
Merlot has been tested extensively for 6
years (1998-2004) at 29 locations and
averaged 26 cwt./acre.
